Working The Facts #WTF
Description
Strap in ladies and gentlemen, we are coming hot today! I may be flying solo, but that doesn't mean I am not bringing the heat! Before we jump in, I have to make a little bit of an announcement. Next Friday will have special guests…yes guest..Plural on the show! Tune in on Monday to find out who the mystery guests will be. Alright let's go!
Thank you, Andrea Amico (Found of Privacy4Cars) for posting this article earlier this week: https://bit.ly/3cBJeX1 Andrea was on the show earlier this year (Andrea Episode: https://bit.ly/3oqOv6y), and you know he crushed it! GM offers rebate on Cadillac Lyriq if drivers sign an NDA and agree to be tracked. Ummm...ok So earlier this summer, GM quietly pushed the Lyriq Private Offer to certain customers. CarsDirect.com reported this on June 30. They stopped short of saying who was eligible or why GM had such a deal going. Hold on there is more. A Cadillac dealer familiar with the program told the Free Press that in exchange for the $5,500 rebate, the selected customers agreed to be part of an early adopters' study and give Cadillac access to their driving patterns. There are about 20 customers in the program. Things that make you go "Hmmm..."
Would you give up your privacy and have every moment tracked for $5,500? I know I wouldn’t for that #. What is your # to give up your privacy?
Speaking of invasion of privacy, remember where I said I would circle back to Coffeyville? Now is the time. After speaking with Vasilios Lambos, Wikimotive’s Zach Billing put out his article that hit most of our LI accounts where he talked about Google Analytics was now misreporting location for iOS users. Zach's Article: https://bit.ly/3okI1Ge
Let’s break down a few things here as this is pretty mind blowing and goes to why you should always work the facts and NOT the ones that support your theory or the ones on the top layer. In 2006, Wired wrote about Coffeyville, KS, not far from the geographic center of the lower 48 United States. More on Coffeyville: https://bit.ly/3co2YNB
A farmhouse IP address has often been used when a true geolocation cannot be found, leading to numerous hijinks with over 600 million IP addresses pointing to their residence. Could you imagine if that was your home?! Have you been a victim of Coffeyville or bizarre traffic?
Google Speed Test: Let's take this one step further: Google Speed Test. Sounds simple enough right? You would think so! Sooo when I run mine, it says my server is currently in Chicago. While I wish I was in downtown 312, I am not. In fact, if I Google whatsmyipaddress, it shows my IP address is 39 miles from Chicago. Now that is not too bad from where I actually am right now. Let’s take another example. My good friend Dusty Sutherland. He checks his cell using 5G. It showed his server was in Chicago. He lives in OH. When checking his WiFi, it showed his server as in Mansfield OH. While it was at least in the same state, Mansfield is a 2 hour drive from his house.
Static, Dynamic IP, VPN: Now let’s throw into the mix when someone has a Dynamic or constantly changing/rotating IP address. With VPN (Virtual Private Network), one’s IP Address is hidden along with other items. Do you think maybe geo location may be a little more difficult/less accurate?
Why does this matter? If you are trying to market In OH, but your ad is being served in Chicago or even 2 hours away, you are marketing the wrong area. For those that say, well we are still getting the ad in front of buyers! Let’s break that down. First off quality vs quantity. Secondly, how many dealers is one passing before reaching your store? Do you want to market that far out of your area? Are you ok with losing all the service of this customer over the next 3-5 years? They are not coming back to service with you, which means they will statically not buy from you again.
